WATERGATE STUDIOS - 1985

The ad at the top dates from March 1983 and gives the lowdown on recording session costs at the Watergate studio in the Seagate.
Later in 1985, Hilary, from Deadbeat mag, popped along to the Watergate studio to have a chat with boss, Phil Ramsay.
He gives a bit of background info into the kind of gear the studio had available, as well as a quick word about the musicians who dropped by to use it.

  1. Was Watergate where Seagate Studios is now? If so, the "flooding" comment sounds familiar...

  2. unfortunatly the place closed after a 'speeding convicion' for poor P, I remember the predesesor the SLR(sound logic recording) studios run by Charlie and Grant I think the flooding did them in and the insurance would always be a problem with this place! is wattie having problems with water ingress or has it been solved?

  3. I'm sure Phil Ramsay runs a electronic/valve/audio spare parts service called Bluebell Audio if it's the same guy I'm thinking of?

  6. Interesting interview from Phil there. No Bear, the flooding is pretty much under control now, after extensive work from Scottish Water last year. When it rains torrentially at high tide, it still eventually starts to come into the boiler room in the back corridor but the flood pumps handle that :-)

  8. Place floods with high tide on Tay. Great to see someone remembers Watergate Tape Recordings. Phil inherited some money and decided to have a go building the studio. Himself, John Chambers and myself gutted and rebuilt a live end/dead end studio. Had some good kit for it's analogue time. Loved the experience of building and working a studio, meeting some good musicians. I personally have some good memories of that era in 80's Dundee. Abruptly came to an end after Phil and I had an altercation, not long after Phil had an extended holiday in Perth.
