CHS DOMESTIC SCIENCE - 1970

Well here's a Craigie High School classroom I was never in - the Domestic Science room. I haven't even got a clue who the teachers were. In fact, this image is the first time I've seen inside the place.
The photo was taken on 17th August 1970, just before the school first opened, hence the bare look.
What's the "Science" in it refer to anyway? Learning how a can opener works?!!

  3. Domestic Science was along the bottom corridor underneath English. A place I hardly ever went!

  5. In the early to mid 80s when I was at Craigie, the Home Economics department has Mrs Penhale (nee McGuire, she was our reggie teacher) and Mrs Scotland. I agree, 'Domestic Science' is pushing it: when we were lumbered with it in 1st and 2nd year we were taught how to bake biscuits and make egg salas, and how to sew a snake-shaped draught excluder together. (Although we also put together a huge flag for when United won the league in '83!).

  6. It was "Home Ecky" when I was at another CHS (Carnoustie HS) in the late 1980s.

I remember learning how to make beans on toast and chocolate bananas, and feeling really groggy after each lesson due to the heat given off by all the ovens. We also had sewing lessons (embarrassing for 13 year old guys), and I remember making a cushion cover with a picture of a ZX Spectrum on it.

    Happy days!
