Don't know if Eddie went here to be shorn, but this is Salon 51 in the Murraygate - going for it!

Ad is dated 1984.

EDDIE'S STYLE CHANGE - 80'S

This is the same Eddie as seen in yesterdays items, only this time modelling a totally different hairstyle, where he seems to have gone for a John Lydon kind of look.

I just put this image up to subtly flow from fashion to hair, and to kick-start a few days worth of retro salon action!

STEVE REID AT THE CUTTING EDGE

Around the mid/late 70's, before Dundee guitarist Steve Reid was in The Associates & Orbidoig, he used to work in Johnalan hairdressers.

Ironically, I reckon this picture of him looks a bit like the kind of photo we used to see on the walls in gents barbers!

Not sure if this hairstyle was one of his own creations though!!

THE CLAIROL 1200 - 1980's

See this hairdryer of mine, the Clairol 1200, it just conked out on me about 3 years ago. I'd been using this one since around 1980, so nearly 3 decades it lasted.

If memory serves me correctly, I got it from Argos, which was located around the Quality Inn area in the Overgate at the time. A good wee purchase it turned out to be too.

I still have the same thick full head of hair I had back then, no sign of it receding or thinning on top yet! However, some of you may not know that for those less fortunate, in the 70's there used to be a place in Victoria Road who provided a "hair implant" service.

It went under the name - Top Secret - which I can't help find funny.

Vanity and discretion rolled into one!

JEANNE'S HAIDRESSER - VICTORIA ROAD

On the opposite end of the Wellgate area to where Paynes was, was another hairdresser called Jeanne. It opened up on Victoria Road in the mid 70's, with this picture of the premises taken in November 1976.
Again, it wasn't a place I was in as I'm guessing it was for ladies only.

1963 AD #2 - CAIRDS HAIRDRESSER

2nd ad is for Cairds Hairdresser's at 21 Reform Street.
Not a place I ever went to but I can imagine there was probably quite a lot of Bristow's shampoo involved!

QUICKIES - EXCHANGE STREET

This Barber shop in Exchange Street in the 60's and early 70's used to be known by locals as "Quickies". A nickname, not a business name. I think it just had City Hairdresser or something above the door. Another name it was called was "Scotties", after Scott, the guy who ran it. The photo above, which was taken in the late 80's has yet another name variant!
I'll always remember it as Quickies though. An apt description...in for a quick trim and out again. No messing, no fuss, no problem!

HUGH FARQUHAR AD - 1976

By the early 70's, Dundee was trying to move away from the traditional old style barbers and get into more modern "hairdressing".
Farquhar's in the High Street was probably the most obvious example, this being the place to go for feather cuts, tints, Bowie cuts and so on.

ROBERTSON'S - VICTORIA STREET BARBER

Robertson's in Victoria Street was the barber's I used to go to in the 60's when I was Primary School age. I remember the barber's used to put a plank of wood across the top of the barber chair's arms for kids to sit on because the youngsters would otherwise be too low down in the chair for barber's to reach.
Styles began with the basic "short back & sides", then progressed to the "neckline" and ended up with just asking for a "trim" as hair got longer towards the end of the 60's.
