A SHOT IN THE DARK - 1980

Here's a rare wee Dundee band relic, with an amusing twist.
This is an original ticket to a Scrotum Poles gig at Dundee College of Education in Gardyne Road, dated 9 Oct 1980.
However, the college wouldn’t let them perform under their own name so for one night only they became - A SHOT IN THE DARK..!!
Some other entertainment on the night thrown in - disco, raffle...boat races...that kinda thing!!

COLLEGE OF COMMERCE - 1970

 

This is a feature about the College Of Commerce which was published when it had not long opened in 1970.
It has all the info about the building, the rooms, the facilities, the courses and so on, so I don't need to go into detail here.
A few photos to accompany it too, which may bring back a few memories for those of you who attended.
The only time I went there was in 1974 when our Craigie High School class visited it.
We were in our final year and the careers officer arranged it.
We got a full tour of the building.
They were scouting for fresh newcomers to enroll on their courses but I wasn't one who took them up on the offer.

BANDS DOING BATTLE IN DUNDEE

Here's a couple of examples of Dundee based contests involving bands doing battle with each other.
The first item dates from August 1979 and is for a talent contest being held at the Tech College (Bowling Alley).
This one ended up with around 6 bands battling it out I seem to remember. No idea what the winner got mind you!
The ad was published in a local fanzine.
The other item is dated July 1982 and was for a UK battle, the Dundee heat taking place on 9 October.
I don't know which local bands ended up participating in it or what venue it was, but the eventual winners got cash and a recording deal.
The item was published in the national music press.

UNIVERSITY WAIFS

The Waifs was the name of Dundee University's theatre group who formed in the 1960's.
They called themselves this because they didn't have a permanent theatre home-base at the time, having to rehearse and perform at various venues outside the University.
The item at the top is dated November 1965, and is an announcement about The Waifs first full-length production titled "Les Justes". A play by Albert Camus, directed by Brian Clarke, and on at Lochee Rep.
The other items are from another Waifs performance and is the programme to accompany a play called "The Fire Raisers" which they put on at the Rep in 1966.
In amongst the pages you'll be able to spot Robin Soans, who went on to become a well known actor.
