The last of the University gig images from the 1978 Be Stiff Tour. The one and only, Wreckless Eric. This was actually Eric's 2nd Stiff tour as he was on the original tour the previous year, along with Elvis Costello, Ian Dury & co.Wreckless Eric released a belter of a single in 1977 called "Whole Wide World", a classic piece of pop produced by Nick Lowe, which has since gone on to feature in a couple of movie soundtracks.Big thanks to Mike Gallacher for the photos.
Here's Rachel Sweet performing at the University gig. Rachel was only 16 when she went on the Be Stiff tour, and as a consequence, still being school age, she had to have a personal tutor with her on the train to catch up with her school work in between gigs! She is mostly known for her pop hit single - "B-A-B-Y".Photography by Mike Gallacher.
The 2nd of the University snapshots from the Be Stiff Tour 78 is Mickey Jupp. The band line-up for this gig was - Mickey Jupp (vocals, guitar) - Vic Young (bass) - Pete Gosling (guitar) & Mac Poole (drums). Photography by Mike Gallacher.
The "Be Stiff Tour" stopped off in Dundee to play at the University on 24th October 1978. Stopped off - an appropriate term because, being Stiff Records, they went about things just a wee bit differently from your average record company, and on this occasion the novelty was to have 5 of their top acts all on the one show, touring the UK together, by train! The 5 artists that hopped off at the station to be showcased were - Lene Lovich - Jona Lewie - Mickey Jupp - Rachel Sweet and Wreckless Eric.I have 4 top notch photos from the Dundee University gig, taken by Mike Gallacher, that I will be putting up on view.Starting with the image above of Jona Lewie, who most of you will know from his many appearances on Top of The Pops, especially at Xmas time!Below is a short film clip of the Stiff train setting off at the start of the tour, including a word from Jona himself.
