Here's Dundee heavy metal merchants, Arrival, blasting out their stuff at Café Club Bar.
I don't know much about these guys and couldn't find anything substantial about them on the net, but when I dipped into past Retro comments, I found out their guitarist was John Curran and their drummer, Kipper, was the son of local jazzman, Jimmy Deuchar.
If anyone else has more Arrival facts, then drop the gen into the comments.

Is that Danny McAfee with the mic?
ReplyDeleteGood pic of the interior of Cloisters, those stairs and walkways were rather dangerous when you'd had a few. And I liked a few.
Talking of heavy, metal great documentary on Thin Lizzy last night BBC4
ReplyDeleteAnd the Dundee connection?
They took the name from a cartoon robot in The Beano "Tin Lizzie"

Cloisters was a brilliant pub! I remember watching Scotland v Uruguay there in the 1986 World Cup. It must have been one of the first pubs in Dundee to have the TV projected onto large screens!
ReplyDeleteIt then became Cafe Club, then it burned down!
It is Danny McAfee on Vocals. Him and John Curran are still performing with Led Zep tribute band The Levee Breakers.
ReplyDeleteWere Arrival featured on an episode of Taggart?
ReplyDeleteYes, Arrival was in that episode of Taggart. In the episode they portrayed a band called The Rivals. Amazing just how awful they were. To see them described as a heavy metal band is hilarious. Probably the worst episode of Taggart ever, simply because of the music(?)
DeleteI would have to agree! The words in the songs do not make since when sung together.
DeleteBit of plagiarism with the name. Arrival had been a one hit wonder band with a song called Friends in 1970. Obviously no relation.
ReplyDeleteThe biggest pity about Cloisters burning down was what replaced it on that site. Abertay should be ashamed of the scabby eyesore they put up there. But then, they have a long history of building scabby eyesores which continues to this day.
yes it is you danny
ReplyDeleteRumbled by John
ReplyDelete;-)
Heavy metal, top of the class,
ReplyDeleteStuff the media up your arse!
Thought provoking stuff indeed!
ReplyDeleteWasn't Steve Duffy the bassist for Arrival? Or was that Leaf? My memory is very foggy.
ReplyDeletemr graham (mandys bro') was the bassist always seen in a red white and black bikers jacket and white bassies, as was the fashion.
ReplyDeletethe bear
That a decent crowd in front of Arrival as well. Must have had a following then? Is the singer a taxi driver now?
ReplyDeleteYes , you are Danny
ReplyDeleteand are you a social worker iggy ?
ReplyDeleteRIP Kipper. Fantastic drummer and a great guy.
ReplyDeleteCross reference to Street Urchin - Danny was their singer too
ReplyDeleteWasn't aware Kipper passed away. The last I heard he moved to the States. Sorry to hear this if true. As you said, he was a really nice guy.
ReplyDeleteDanny McAfee or Golden Fawn as he was known made me a braw pair o specs when he was in the bifocal business.
ReplyDeleteWell he wants to try them himself when driving that taxi , Mr McGoo mair like
ReplyDeleteTrue , Ive been a "passenger"
ReplyDeleteSeemingly the journey is more fun than the arrival
ReplyDeleteWatty, can you expand on what happened to Kipper? He was my boyfriend for many years and when I last heard from him a couple of years ago, he was well and living in Las Vegas. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteHello, I'm an Italian journalist, I'm looking for information about Steve (aka Kipper). I'm trying to know more about his life in Dundee, because as you surely know his father was a very appreciated Italian songwriter - but with a very incomplete biography. It would be great to be able to talk a little bit about Steve with you. If you want you can contact me at this mail 28settembre1934@gmail.com. It would be really important to me and your contribution would be vital for my research.
DeleteHope to hear from you.
All the best,
Lucilla
Mr Graham (Gary) here of the red and black leather jacket , Steve Duffy played with Leaf, I joined then the band became - Arrival - then - The Heat ....... great days lots of laughs and too much bevvy :-)
ReplyDeleteI was there that night. Played it myself the week after.
ReplyDeleteThey appeared in the fourth Taggart serial, Knife Edge, in which Taggart is shot in the shoulder by the killer at a discotheque. It was transmitted in 1987.
ReplyDeleteWrong!
DeleteTaggart's "Knife Edge" was in 3 parts and it was first broadcast in February 1986.
Arrival were a band called The Rivals in it.
