THE UNDERWORLD CAFE - 1960'S
The Underworld Cafe, on the go in the 60's, was to be found at 204 Perth Road, sharing the building with the Shakespeare Restaurant. Owner was Alf Paladini, the guy in the picture. Not sure if the interior designer had a split personality, but there seems to be a bit of a bizarre clash going on between a Swiss chalet look and a tropical island hut! I like the tree trunk seats mind you. By 1970, the place had changed to the Gold Lucky Chinese restaurant. The advert is dated 1965.
Been dying to find a picture of the Underworld, this is where I had my first date with my now wife. used to love the egg and bacon rolls and the obligatory coke, then in green bottles and tasted totally different to the canned stuff. Fanta was the other drink back then.
laurie.....do you mean lawrence?......if so he is still alive and must be in his 90's and fit as a fiddle....he also still drives (a green vw minibus) and still sortoff works as they own and maintain property around dundee - used to have offices down at the old mill in brown street (possibly still do as i think they own all the old mill flats and commercial property there......hes a good friendly guy to chat to about old dundee and or old cars, etc
done a wee check on the net after my last reply and info on lawrence - he was born in 1930 so hes currently 84 yrs old (and still works).....LP Properties, old mill complex, dundee.
We used the cafe on a regular basis Brian Ritchie, Allan Bannerman Brian Connely Brian Cooper nice group of Girls wish I could remember all the names lol
I used to work for him (Lawrence @ Riverside) He was a clever mechanic and a good businessman but wasn't so strong on people skills. I saw him fall out with customers before they booked their car in. Happy days tho!
The “Shake” was my go to place every weekend. I had lots of friends that I met there. I left school in 1962 and went to St Michaels School, my name was Maureen Reilly.
