Don't Panic!!!....the plane wasn't a bomber...this huge crater is in fact the Longhaugh Quarry, located at the "border" of Fintry and Whitfield. I recall being told the quarry had been there before Fintry was built, so it was obviously doing business for quite a few decades. It is now completely filled in.
The 2 schools in Longhaugh Road would be Longhaugh Primary and St Lukes.
At the bottom left corner, in amongst all the trees is Longhaugh Hotel. For a while, the staff in the lounge/bar would dress up as cowboys and had a kind of Western theme going on there, long before dressing up for line-dancing became a craze. The hotel was another victim of the bulldozers and has since been flattened.

Not just the hotel thats gone in that photo. Multis, most of the skarne blocks and the big blocks across from shops. Spent many days of my youth climbing up and down that quarry. Fantastic photos. Keep up the good work.
ReplyDeleteThere used to be a rope swing there too. Taking our lives in our hands. I tried it when I was six, was caught, and had my erse skelped for it..
ReplyDeleteIt was the Kestrel quarry, wasn't it?
It definetly had kestrel across the gates in 80's anyway , remember it well
DeleteI also had a 'shot' on that swing...jeezus!!
ReplyDeleteWow, another time I remember getting into trouble-playing at that quarry with my brother on that same swing. Rembember those gas holders on Pitkerro Road? I wonder if they are still there. I truly have to get back to Dundee. i remember all kinds of havoc because we thought the gas holders where on fire but it turned out that the whiskey warehouse somewhere near to there burned down. I remember my mother saying that anyway. From there, you could see St. Savious and the houses in Happyhillock-it was all so fascinating to a young child.
ReplyDeleteGod my Granny lived in Longhaugh Terrace and I used to stay during school holidays. My playground was the quarry and the building site that became Whitfield. When I was older I used to deliver papers in the multis - there was a mother and daughter paper selling duo that used to stand on the corner of Fintry Drive ah memories!!!
ReplyDeleteMy Grandad used to work at Longhaugh quarry. He started work there in the 1930s and used to cycle to work all the way from just outside Downfield. Then he was allocated one of the quarry houses in Fintry Terrace in 1939. My family lived there til the 60s. I think the quarry workers houses in Fintry & Longhaugh Terraces were built in the late 1920s. I can remember the blasts from the quarry when I was a little girl in the 50s. It was pretty scary!
