LOUIE IN THE TELE - 1972

Some of you may remember this wee fella who used to crop up in the Tele regularly - it's Louie.

This was a syndicated cartoon and his creator, Harry Hanan, kept the strip going for around 30 years up till he retired in the mid 70's, with this particular example dating from January 1972.

Although there was never any dialogue in the strip, somehow you always knew what was being said!

THE FIRST DUNDEE EXTRA - 1986

18th January 1986 was the date of the very first issue of the Extra.

It was free and was shoved through 60,000 letterboxes each week.

Not much news in the first edition to be honest, mostly adverts for car showrooms and furniture shops. It did have David Phillips "Meh Dundee" mind you, continuing on from the defunct Journal.

THE LAST PEOPLE'S JOURNAL - 1986

11th January 1986 was the date of the very last issue of the Journal.
It was, however, only the Dundee edition that disappeared from the news stands, all the other editions around various parts of Scotland remained.
The Journal was replaced the following week by the Dundee Extra.

TOMMY SMALL'S PATCH

This is the area outside Boots where Tommy Small sold the Tele. You can see him "in action" in the photo, taken in January 1974.
When you went to buy a paper from him, he would use a swift flick technique to remove the Tully from under his arm, which would catch you by surprise sometimes. Not sure exactly how long he stood at this spot, but it must have been a couple of decades.
His other patch was, The Phoenix!

THE SCHOOL FORTUNE TELLER

You'll all remember these paper fortune tellers from your school days. Place your index fingers and thumbs underneath the 4 segments then flip back & forwards.
Here's a reminder of the sequence involved -
FT OPERATOR "Pick a colour"
CLIENT "Blue"
FT OPERATOR "B-L-U-E"
FT OPERATOR "Pick a number"
CLIENT "Three"
FT OPERATOR "1-2-3"
FT OPERATOR "Pick another number"
CLIENT "Eight"
FT OPERATOR lifts flap and reads out what is written underneath the number 8 segment.
At primary school in the 60's we usually had silly things written like "You fancy the teacher" or something. In secondary in the 70's it was the same kind of thing...only X-Rated.!!
