An ad for The Workshop in the Nethergate from 1988, a place I know absolutely zilch about.

HUGH FARQUHAR AD - 1978

I forgot Hugh Farquhar also had a place in Crichton Street - although they themselves seem to have forgotten to put Street in the ad!

I automatically think of the High Street salon anytime Farquhars name crops up.

Anyway, this one is from 1978.

PARR AD - 1974

This ad for Parr in the Ferry is dated 1974.

Sorry about the hair dye drips!

JOHN WATSON AD - 1971

An ad for John Watson in Cleghorn Street dated 1971.

This was a ladies salon, which may explain why I don't know what posticheur is!

My old neighbour, Margaret, would know though because she used to do John's books back then.

JOHNALAN ADS - 70's/80's



The top Johnalan ad is from 1979 and lets you know the whereabouts of their salons.
You also may have noticed that the image is a merged photo of both John & Alan - John with the mouser, Alan with the beard.
I assume they didn't offer this look to their customers, but it does remind me of the time Jimmy Savile made an appearance on Top Of The Pops in the psychedelic 60's, with one half of his hair white and the other side black!
The middle ad is dated 1984 and just has their Crichton Street salon on it - but it does display their futuristic "Countdown" typeface logo which I've always liked.
As regards their outlandish third ad - well it's not often I'm lost for words on Retro but on this occasion, I'm completely dumbstruck!!
All I can add is that this bizarre creation was published, large sized, in the Tele in March 1977.

RICKSONS ADS - 70's/80's

A couple of adverts for Ricksons in the Nethergate.

Top one is from 1979 and the one underneath, 1980.

Two well known local hairdressers who were doing their apprenticeship at Ricksons at the time of the '79 ad, were Graeme Merchant and Norrie McDicken - but in 1980 both moved to Salon 51 to finish their training there.

Norrie now has his super-duper place in Reform Street - Salonori.

No idea how long Ricksons itself lasted.

SALON 51 AD - 1984

Don't know if Eddie went here to be shorn, but this is Salon 51 in the Murraygate - going for it!

Ad is dated 1984.

IN HAWKES AD - 1988

A 1988 advert for In Hawkes Hairdressing in Westport.
Not sure whether "Hawkes" is supposed to mean "Hawkhill" in a more upmarket slang way, or if it's someones surname, but anyway, I do like that haircut!

JACK AND IRVING AD - 1987

This ad for Jack and Irving Hairdressing in Commercial Street is dated 1987.
Dawn, one of their stylists, did the hairdo in the picture.

SALON 51 FLYER

I don't have an exact year for this flyer printed for the opening of Salon 51 in the Murraygate, but I reckon late 70's/early 80's wouldn't be too far off.

As you can see, Dundee FC players were involved in the official ceremony razzle, which got me wondering - did Salon 51 have a special offer on for a blue rinse that day!?

PARR & FREDERICKE ADS - 1968

2 ladies hairdresser ads from 1968.

Parr Salons was at 128 Gray Street in the Ferry.

I seem to recall Parr's had a bit of a reputation for being a cut above the rest, although maybe it was they themselves who planted this high opinion in the first place!

As well as the Cowgate, Perth Road & Logie Street addresses in the ad, Fredericke also, later on, had a Ladies Hairdressing Training Centre in the Nethergate.

Now, Fredericke was obviously doing very good business with ladies hairstyling, but back then, there was another hairdresser who was also very successful with the ladies!! John Watson on the corner of Cleghorn St & Benvie Rd, used to attract ladies from all over Dundee. Not because of his scissor work, but because of his good looks! Yes, females, even from the other end of town, would make a special trip to his joint just to swoon and go weak at the knees!!

Ach well, it was the swinging 60's after all!!

Last I heard, he moved to New Zealand.

So away and book your flight girls..!!

STEVE REID AT THE CUTTING EDGE

Around the mid/late 70's, before Dundee guitarist Steve Reid was in The Associates & Orbidoig, he used to work in Johnalan hairdressers.

Ironically, I reckon this picture of him looks a bit like the kind of photo we used to see on the walls in gents barbers!

Not sure if this hairstyle was one of his own creations though!!

JEANNE'S HAIDRESSER - VICTORIA ROAD

On the opposite end of the Wellgate area to where Paynes was, was another hairdresser called Jeanne. It opened up on Victoria Road in the mid 70's, with this picture of the premises taken in November 1976.
Again, it wasn't a place I was in as I'm guessing it was for ladies only.

HAIRDRESSERS IN KING STREET

Paynes hair stylists was located at 2 King Street and was there throughout the 60's up to the early 70's when the shop disappeared along with the rest of that section of King Street during the demolition of the Wellgate.

The photo was taken in the early 60's and would have looked pretty modern in comparison to it's surroundings.

Not a place I went to, so unsure if it attracted Dundee's young trendy hipsters or if it was geared more towards the middle age group.

Forward-wind into the 80's and across the road at 9 King Street, Harley Quinns Hair Studio was doing the biz.

The fact that this advert appeared in a local fanzine in 1984 would indicate that it was aimed at fashionable youths rather than the mid-aged.

Mind you, the harlequin illustration looks more sinister than inviting to me.

Maybe it's bald under the skull cap.

Anyway, back in the 60's, years before Harley Quinns, 9 King Street used to be home to the Dundee School Of Ballet.

From ballet slippers to hair clippers..!!
