LEVI'S DUNDEE AD - 1984

This ad dates from 1984 and is for the Levi factory up at Dunsinane, even although the address doesn't crop up in it....tele-communication only it seems!

A reminder that there is a photo of the factory interior in the October 2009 archives.

As you can see, Levi denim was so tough, even attaching them to 2 mules heading in the opposite direction couldn't rip them apart!

Staying with denim in the 80's - I remember in 1982 I visited the town in the South of France from which denim gets its name. Nimes - as in (from Nimes "de Nimes") - then shortened to denim.

The thing about it is though, being on the Mediterranean coast - it was far too hot to wear jeans, everyone just wore shorts!!

After a mass of redundancies in the early/mid 80's, many of the departments in Timex factories around Dundee lay idle. To try and attract alternative use for the machinery available, Timex printed hundreds of brochures in various languages to see if they could entice other companies to make use of what the factories had to offer. However, despite the desperate effort, it was all too little too late and they eventually closed their doors for good with the factory contents having been auctioned off.

The above pictures are from these 80's brochures and show a variety of departments when they were still in full flow.

The 3 main Timex factories were at Camperdown, Milton of Craigie and Dunsinane, which in their heyday employed many thousands.

A local saying back then was "Everybody in Dundee knows someone who works in Timex".

So on that basis, there are bound to be some of you out there who will be familiar with the departments in the pictures, or maybe even recognise a friend or relative.

FERRANTI AT DUNSINANE

The photo featuring the front of the Ferranti factory at Dunsinane dates from the early 80's.

They made hi-tech instruments like transformers, microwave components, lasers and circuit board connectors. Their Dundee factory made the transformers for the Ariane satellite launcher.

The ad under it is from the 70's and they've used 2 connectors to make it look like the bridges on the Tay.

One of the factories at Dunsinane was for Levi's. Here's a wee nosey at the interior taken in the early 80's with some local lassies slaving away!

A shot of the Dunsinane Industrial Estate area taken in the early/mid 80's.
Not much remains of it these days, but in the 60's, 70's & 80's, it was a busy place with factories belonging to the likes of Ferranti - Timex - Wright - NCR - Levi and a few others.
