EUROPEAN FLAVOURS IN THE 80'S

The top 2 ads are for Don Quixote, the Spanish restaurant in Blackness Road.
First is dated 1981 and 2nd is from 1984.
The reason I put both up was because in the 81 ad it mentions Miguel the chef - but in the 84 one, his name's not there and is replaced by a "dedicated young staff". Well by 1984 there was a new restaurant opened up in Broughty Ferry. It's name? Miguel's. So I'm putting 2 and 2 together here!
In 1980, Le Mirage, on the corner of Ward Road and the Conshie, was indulging in European dishes every Wednesday, a theme they termed "Continental Night", with a variety of cuisine from Italy, Spain and France to choose from.

Since writing the above caption, I have been given photos of Miguel's and they can be viewed in the January 2010 Retro archive.

  4. Ignacio Campos was the deputy head waiter at the Invercarse in the late seventies, and has been the proprietor of the very successful Igg's in Edinburgh for a number of years now.

  7. Don Quixote. I remember that place. Went there with the family for tapas near Christmas time only to be massively disappointed that there was a "Christmas menu" on with only two choices Turkey with all the trimmings or Spaghetti Bolognaise. Since one member of the family was a vegetarian, she was offered Spaghetti Bolognaise "without the Bolognaise".

  8. I was a waiter at the Invercarse in the Early/mid seventies the head waiter at that time was Salvatore a Sicillian who left to go to La Mirage and Angelo a Spaniard then took over, I left before he did to go to the Tay Centre Hotel.
I also took the photos for the newly opened /refurbished 'Miguels' when George Duffus did the ribbon cutting, that would've been mid eighties I remember it was a very boozy night, come to think of it I dont think I got paid either. GG will send you some pix if I can find them.

  9. Angelo was the head waiter at the time that Ignacio was his sidekick. They ran a lovely line in tip appropriation, somehow persuading part-time staff that they had to hand any gratuities to them!
