There doesn't appear to be much of a difference with the view along Douglas Terrace nowadays and when the above photo was taken - the mid 70's.
This is one of my brothers snaps and you should be able to notice he managed to catch the moment a train went whizzing past Royal Tay Yacht Club.
So just for a bit of fun, I thought I'd accompany the image with this piece of film below - the same scene, but from the train drivers viewpoint.
The footage is from inside the drivers cab, and is the full, uninterrupted trip from Dundee Station to Broughty Ferry Station, passing places such as the Docks, Stannergate, Grassy Beach and of course this stretch here in the snap.
Duration? - 4 minutes.
"ALL ABOARD!"
Train seems to be going slower than the cars on the Ferry Rd
ReplyDeleteThank you Mr. Retro for this run of railway stuff. I am glad to see that by the number of informed comments recently, I am not the only railway buff to enjoy your site. Nice to see the old gasometer in the film. Can anyone remember why and when it was done up to look like a birthday cake?
ReplyDeleteThe gas tank was done up like the cake for the 'Dundee 800' celebrations. That would have been 1988 or so I think. The 'candles' were made out of 6 inch plastic gas pipe.
ReplyDeleteBrilliant....the Bridie household enjoyed that.
ReplyDeleteGood stuff Retro.Only travelled north a few times,up to Arbroath for the football. My big train journey was every school holiday down to Ripon,Yorks to visit my grandparents. On the old trains, head out the windie stuff.Magic.
ReplyDeleteFantastic!! Thanks so much for the video
ReplyDeleteIn the days of British Rail i took the train and not the bus and it was always a race to get the front seats behind the driver for the journey home in the 3 car DMU so these views are familiar but i remember a lot more track at the docks,The impressive Camperdown Jct signal box at the crossing and all the other signals and infrastructure that was swept away around about 85.Dundee was stripped of Railway in 85 as track, buildings, yards and depots were demolished as the then government continued its anti railway agenda! Crazy!
ReplyDeleteYou never appreciate a good thing till it's gone. Happy memories.
ReplyDeleteWonder if the RTYC would ever think of ditching the "Royal" title and consider calling it the Silvery Tay Yacht Club instead?!
