I don't know anything about Millars, who were based at 115 Nethergate on the corner of South Tay Street in 1971.
I'd have been 13 in '71 and so didn't venture as far along as this when shopping in the city centre.
Judging by the ad, they seem to have been a typical gents tailors rather than a place for teenagers anyway.
Meanwhile, their shop in Gray Street in the Ferry also catered for the ladies.
Millars used to have a branch at 9 Nethergate, opposite Draffens, that was pulled down to make way for Littlewoods in 1966. The Ferry branch was still going strong last time I looked, though.
ReplyDeleteAs a University student in 1958 and 1959 I used to work at Millars shop in the Nethergate as a Christmas time worker during my Christmas break from my studies at St Andrews. While other students found holiday jobs as Christmas time Posties I worked in warm and comfortable conditions. Working there allowed me to develop my personal dress sense and a recognition that “vestis virum facit” clothes maketh the man!
