I was hanging out in some old ramshackle tumbledown saloon way out west recently, when this wizened old-timer slid an object over to me across the full length of the bar. "Have it" he said, "I've plenty more nuggets like this stashed away in my shack down by the creek". He then finished his plate of beans, gathered up his belongings and rode off into the sunset.
Luckily for Retro, that bar was in Westport, the creek was the Tay and the nugget was a rare recording from Dundee's dusty past.
This long forgotten sonic posse was The Raunchy Guys, 4 notorious varmints who got together to rustle up their unspeakable plans and go stampeding across the county inflicting this torture - all in the name of music.
Fortunately, their music was Country & Western, so nobody really noticed!
Anyway, the lowdown on the hoedown is as follows...
Band line-up, Al Hendrickx, guitar - Jim Low, vocal - Gordon Walker, bass and Joe Jordan, drum machine.
This track of theirs called "Johnny Cash's Boots" was recorded at Al's mums house in King Street in winter 1983.
You can tell by the lyrics and the fact they use a drum machine that they were not exactly die-hard C&W purists, and yet they did actually do gigs at Dundee's Country & Western Club.
Mind you, there is some rather fine authentic sounding twang geetar galloping along throughout.
I think the song ought to bring a smile to your face, but if not, perhaps their C&W names will... there was Big Musket Teepee - Bullet Fritter Snakebelt - Stompin Hoss and The Bear.
That's all for now y'all!
Big thanks to Sheriff Walker.
My favourite track was Penetration Blues.
ReplyDeleteI remember this and more awesome tracks, Gordon you must assemble more of these Jeng tracks
ReplyDeleteI have around 15 of 'em on a cd at home, you want?
ReplyDeletefanta
I've got the entire collection, and it rocks! Probably one of the best albums ever. It really is the gift that keeps on giving. Jeng is on fire! Try and listen to the whole thing without laughing. It can't be done.
ReplyDeleteWas Jim in The Raunchy Guys when he wore the bumble-bee suit, or was it Ken Puffer and the Tombola Wind?
ReplyDeleteThere was a post some months ago where someone said that they had seen a video of these guys playing live? Jim riding around on a wee tricycle? Would love to see it if it exists.
ReplyDeleteI like the thought of this track being listened to in the USA.
ReplyDeleteOne of my favourite sites on the internet is called "Beware Of The Blog" which is part of New York's WFMU radio station's output. An absolute goldmine of all things musically wonderful and weird.
This recording would fit in perfectly with the rest of the stuff on BOTB. Now how to go about attracting their attention..?!!!
gordon, your a gent, can I have a copy please, we must meet for a beer.....just been listening to Robert Gordon/Link Wray "Fresh Fish" album funnily enough.....class

ReplyDeleteloving it.
Lesley g.. and heads up to my pal Lynne Robertson if she reading this.Best pal i ever had.. Punk Rock :)
I remember these so called Raunchy Guys turning up to play at the Tay Hotel with 1guitar,1bass,a bag full of Dens road market costumes&a huge wax cock.2months before they played&upset our Heavy Rock clientele by playing inane ridiculous Elvis&Mud covers&the singer rolling around the floor with no pants on,swiging from customers drinks etc.Of course I banned them.Do not give them any praise they got me into alot of trouble with my management.Perverts&troublemakers.
ReplyDeleteSounds like a class night out
DeleteBest review ever, none of us managed the wax tobe tho, f
ReplyDeleteIf you were listening to heavy rock in1983 then you deserved to be upset!
ReplyDeleteThat so called bad review makes them sound like The Stooges circa '74. Wish I'd seen them.
ReplyDeletepOne of the funniest things I've ever seen was that gig with jeng scaring the clientel? with his crazy iggy pop routine creeping about on top of the bar half naked with a black eye screeching and bein' " a sex beast" cctv came too late to capture this insane/genius at work freakin'oot the 'norms' in the centre bar, mores the pity! ©
ReplyDeletei have many thimgs in common with my african cousins, as well you know. f.
ReplyDeleteI remember doing an impromptu audition in the backstage area of the Union with jeng and fez for hank wangford and bobby valentino who kept asking me for my phone number, and I thought it was cause he liked my singing voice, he looked very disappionted that I had no phone, I dont know where fanta was but more than likely nesting chicks somewhere with his enormous appendage ;D I think the idea was that hank would be so impressed he'd take us on tour or use the material for himself unfortunately he had very bad taste and gave us the swerve.
ReplyDeleteces't la vie
Dangnabbit, riddle-de-spat! Dangnabbit, plunder my raibitt!
ReplyDeleteI remember seeing JIm singing in a band and wearing a crash helmet that had things like "Pussy Patrol" and "Firm Colt" written on it in marker pen. Would this be The Raunchy Guys or Dirtbox era?
ReplyDeletethe crash helmet was stage apparel for dirtbox, it was a green and white 60's scooter helmet, big fez drew a hoss and a pistole on the helmet, i later got tattoo inspired by the Firm Colt logo, Jim looked mean n fest in the helmet, i wore zip up baffies and looked like a pure gonk, we were more concerned with our appearance at all times. fants
ReplyDeleteAny chance you could release any of the other recordings?!
