HOT POTATO HOUSE AD - 1984
An ad from 1984 for the Hot Potato House in the Overgate. Yeah I remember staggering into this place a couple of times at 2 o'clock in the morning! I seem to recall it was located approximately opposite the Marketgait/Overgate steps.
Yes this place was on the opposite side from "whit evry ain can afford". I used to work part-time after school at Wullie Low's in the Overgate and the guy who opened it was a former employee there. I think the business struggled after the started to put VAT on hot food.
I owned the hot potato house with my now ex husband! we had over 30 fillings and at the weekends could not get the door closed till 3am and we closed at 2am! we also had newsprint the paper shop 2 doors up we eventually sold it on as we had other business commitments but about a year after selling up the shop closed down dont know why as it was a wee goldmmine!!
28p for a baked potato? Changed days indeed!
