This image of Mid Craigie School comes from an advert for Bett Brothers, the builders, dated 1960.
In the 60's, the school's head teacher was Norman Reid, and the jannie was Mr Taylor.
The last time I looked, the school's windows were all boarded up, although I don't know if it was about to be done up or demolished!
Was this school called The Rainbow, or was that another school?
ReplyDeleteYep was indeed called that because of the curvy building.
ReplyDeleteCousin Dupre
I believe it wa renamed Rowantree Primary and an new PFI built Rowantree Primary was bult nearby. I don't know what has happened to the old school but the council will be paying off the new school for the next 30 or 40 years. The taxpayer foots the bill yet they never own the school.
ReplyDeleteNonsense. Mid Craigie demolished.
DeletePile of rubble now sadly, didnt go there but an interesting building, the buildings built to replace these recently look great, but i doubt if they`ll last as long, they will look dated withtin 10 years
ReplyDeleteWas a great building , Could have been good if turned into flats , Clear view down river tay
DeleteWhat a brilliant design.
ReplyDeleteI used to clamber about up on the roof of the rainbow school as there didn't seem to have any janny there during the seven weekies! thats when I wasn't riding the backs of lorries, climbing up the pylons or sitting on barrels floating in the dighty burn oh the joy of the countryside when yir fae the hulltoon and it was a great looking building (but dont mention the asbestos)

ReplyDeleteWent there in 1969/70 and fell over on the steps in th middle of the photo - skint ma nose right on the tip - and two of the most lovely Mid Craigie lassies picked us up an' that was that. Other memories? - first dose of scabies, hoose in Drumlanrig Drive, whulks bought fae a pram. Never did find out why it was called The Rainbow, but I did hear that naebidy whanted to creh it 'Mid Craigie'
ReplyDeleteMy Dad was the gaffer for the building of the roof on the Rainbow.
ReplyDeleteit was a great school whent their 73 to 79
ReplyDeleteI. went to rainbow school. The teachers had a dreadful attitude to some of the kids.If they used the same kind of punishment these days a lot of them would be prosecuted for assault.
ReplyDeleteThis school was at the end of Kingennie Terrace where I lived.
ReplyDeleteMy mum got me sent to Dens Road (the Denny)because my late father had gone there and my granny lived in Isla St. Dont know how that was worked out.
Attended this school from 1971 - 1078. Great memories and a fantastic education from very caring teachers. Shame the building is now demolished , was a shock to see it no longer standing.
ReplyDeleteFantastic teachers when i was a pupil in the 70's . Mid Craigie scheme was a challenging and deprived area to grow up in . Luckily the teaching staff at this brilliant school ensured an excellent primary education and were also first class role models .
ReplyDeleteRole of honour , teachers - Greave , Highlands , Lowry , Kettles , Walker. You gave me the best possible start in life .. thank you!

DeleteCould this be Miss Dorothy Chalmers? She taught me in 1957/8 though so maybe she was not still there in the 70s. I thought she was quite old when she was my teacher but when you are that age I guess everyone seems old!
DeleteI went there in early 60's Mrs Chalmers was a fab teacher
DeleteI remember Miss Chalmers she was my teacher at Mid Craigie,1961 till I left in 1968 what a teacher absolutely brilliant used to take us for gym where we would put the TV out and she watched her horses, while we played pirates unless you had a horse on and would watch it with her I believe she kept teaching into her 70s before you were allowed to do that god bless her.
DeleteYes I do and yes your right
DeleteI whent in the early 70s and she was there she was very old
DeleteI was in her class she let us watch the world cup on the TV with the stilts. She was a big fan of Brazil.

DeleteI attended the Rainbow in the early fifties. I was at St Michaels (the Mikees) a duel religious school and when the building of the Rainbow was completed the presbyterians were transferred to the Rainbow. I believe it was called the Rainbow because the classrooms were painted in the colours of the rainbow. I lived at the top of the Kingsway East and normally walked down the Kingsway to school but sometimes used Kingennie Terrace where my friends lived. I remember playing on the air raid shelters (a legacy from the war years) that were across the far side of the Kingsway. I believe my teacher was Mr MacKenzie a tall imposing gentlemen who as I recall was was not slow in using the belt on you for many reasons. After the 11 plus exams I went to the Stobswell Boys Junior Secondary School, affectionately known as the Stobbie.
ReplyDeletein went to that school a few years before it was demolished it was a very good school
DeleteMy mum when in the 50s she was Maureen hargetion and her brother was tommy
Deletehi hollie yes your auntie was one of my teachers and an excellent one at that and what a waste of a good building i can tell you the new schools stink and the councillors in charge what a sad month in november2009

ReplyDeleteI started school at Mid Craigie Annexe AKA 'The Huttie' in 1955. I loved it there. Teacher was Miss Brown & she was great. After 2 years we were transferred to Linlathen for a year. I think we were meant to go up to the Rainbow then but think it was full up & there was no room for us. Think headmistress at the Huttie was Mrs Ogilvie. My Teacher at Linlathen was Miss Chalmers.
ReplyDeleteSadly, Mr Barr died last August. Mr Chalmers Jannie also gone. Mrs Shaw and Mrs Brodie the auxiliary also died. Miss Lowry died some years ago
ReplyDeleteYou will find photos of old school and class and staff photos oh Mid Craigie Public Group on Facebook
ReplyDeleteI went to midcraigie from 1963---1969. Don't know if it was better or worse than other schools but I remember being happy there and then went on to the Morgan and feeling out of place. I lived in Longtown place.
DeleteAfter being very happy at Mid craigie I went to Longhaugh school when it opened. I didn't like it at all. Then I went on to the Morgan but like you felt so out of place. The teachers always seemed to favour the 'posh' kids. It was a different world.

DeleteI went to the Huttie then moved up to the Rainbow in 1955. I had a teacher called Mrs Zawahca, probably wrong spelling, who was married on a Polish Serviceman. I can remember her bringing in Bread to give the Class a piece of Syrup or Treacle. It was a poor area and probably the only Breakfast some pupils got. I think it was called the Rainbow because of the colour of the Classrooms. I lived in Kingennie Terrace.
ReplyDeleteI remember planting a tree there in 73 and the dinners if you put chairs up you got seconds ohh and the milk best memory is having to take a fork and spoon in for Christmas party's lol
