JIH - FAT SAMS - 1988

Here's a couple of tasty items from a Jih gig that took place at Fat Sams in June 1988.
The 2 top-notch photos show Grant McNally at the mic, with a band mostly made up from members of Better Backwards.
Underneath is a wee review of this very gig which appeared in local magazine, Street Life.
Big thanks to The Bear.

So after a bit of deliberation in the comments as to who the backing musicians are in the photos, we seem to have settled for this line-up...
Neil Forbes, sax - Anth Brown, guitar - Barry Gibson, drums - Jimmy MacKenzie, bass and Jill & Jen McGrath, backing vocals.

  1. The saxophone player was Neil Forbes who had previously played with The Grip. I had forgotten he played at the same time. The two backing singers were Jill and Jen McGrath.

  3. I'd forgotten all about Jih. Thanks for bringing them back! Whats Knobby up to these days anyway? Haven't seen him in Dundee for years. Isn't he a social/drugs worker or something?

  4. Fants (fanta?)did you talk to him or was he apparition like, cos I was told he had odeed fatally, but it might have been Minced Pigglet who told me but others have also said he had died but maybe Vince had told them too. well I'm glad he is still with us as long as there's no comeback tour 8) only kidding Grunt. the question I want answered is who is the bass player.

  12. Wasn't one of knobby's claims to musical fame that he has a minor part in 'The Great Rock n Roll Swindle'? He's in a scene outside a nightclub and goes up to a bouncer (who would later play Pete Beale in 'Enders) and asks 'wheres the toilets mate?' if memory serves. J.

  17. Hi Bear,

Do you mean Bernice O'Rourke? If you do, I knew her as a friend. She used to go out with Zippy when I used to hang out with him. I've been married to Jo for 11 years now, got two bairns and still live in London.

By the way, I'm with Barry on the is it or isn't it Mike Brown debate.

  28. interesting stuff about JIH, but as I remember they only played about 3 gigs. The real BB who seem to only mentioned in the passing here, made countless appearances, locally, and far and wide and even had 4 songs broadcast on the telly. Anyone remember them?

  29. Last I saw Grant McNally he dropped into the Seagate Studio for a nosy back in February this year. Adding my tuppenceworth to the great bass player debate, definitely looks like the late Jimmy MacKenzie there. I remember thinking those backing singers were seriously hot back then, seeing those photos now, I still do :-)

We believe he has...what's it to you?

  34. "NO BAZ"!: ) i'm only teasing you. (thinks, not difficult at all! :) me and "mince go back a long way. i remember "very clearly"! ( as one would.)there was that time back in 83 when i gave him some mushrooms. and we went down to littlewoods.(wow, member that guys?) groovy times, by far! fiona shaw and cath spears out of "it" times. anyway vince lost a "grip" of reality. (surprise, surprise!) succumbed to the treachery of "the littlewoods planter". baz, that things they put plants in....... anywow! after the big plant pot had finished eating him. (somehow?) poor old vince tried to make it to the bogs on castle street, but what with the 2;30pm traffic flow. it simply just didn't happen! steve pounder and myself were in "stitches"!(thank his god he had a jacket to hide the "wet patch". meanwhile on the way back up to my place at step row. vincie boy only goes and get's all amorous (baz that means gay to the likes of you) so i disregarded his intentions, not because he was a friend, but, because i just did'nt fancy him... he's just not my cup of tea baz! but hey! you feel free brother! give vince my love, and tell him i forgive him.cheers. balls!x
