CLUB FEET FASHION - EARLY 80'S

These photos were put up on display at the Rep Theatre last year when the play about Billy Mackenzie "Balgay Hill" was running.
They were taken at Club Feet in the early 80's and were sent to the Rep by Tony Cochrane who used to DJ there.
The images above are a bit on the fuzzy side because they were just taken in the passing from the Rep wall using a mobile, so it's not the original photos that are blurry. They do give you a good reminder though of the kind of gear that was worn to the club.
At least some people made an effort!
That's Billy's bruv on the dancefloor in the top picture.

  1. We used to always sing,

"I've had a shower and then bailed my brother out..."

  2. Am I right in saying that Billy's brother - possibly the guy in the pic - was in a band called Jih?
I have a vague recollection of them supporting Love and Money or someother band at the University Union around about 1983

  3. Grant 'Nobby' McNally was JIH, now deceased from what I've been told. He/they played quite a few gigs in town including Fatties, Cloisters etc Jill and Jen curly haired twins did backing vocals.
He had a couple of 12" singles 'Big Blue Ocean' and 'This Gift' I think thats Alex in the picture Johnny would be the bro' more likely to have been backing singer percussionist(marracca shacka) but I can't remember him being in JIH, but the more I think about it the less certain I am. Damn where did I leave my zimmer?

    2. Hi Grant's (Nobby's) sister Gill here, yes Grant passed away from lung cancer on 16th Sept 2018 in Harrow. You are right in that Johnny Mac did do backing vocals for a few of Jih's gigs back in the 80's. That's Alex in the pic above :)

  6. Yeah it would be good to know if there was a "definitive" line-up for JIH. I only know that Billy passed on a couple of his songs for them to record, and he also done some production work with them.
I thought JIH may be more of a "free-range" set up!
There is a "JIH" who has been posting a few comments on Retro, so was wondering if it was the same one!?

  11. There were a few line ups of Jih and one did feature John McKenzie doing bit of singing, Roberto who went on to play with associates. Later version of Jih was basically Better Backwards without singer Brian Lindsay and just Grant singing. There was also an album of various Jih stuff released on jungle records at the time we were playing some gigs with him which i still have in the cupboard. Last i heard of Grant he was living in Windsor but that was about 15 years ago.

  17. Grant McNally is still very much alive and kicking. John Mackenzie used to do backing vocals on the odd occassion with JIH. I don't think it's John in the photo and I don't think it's me either.

    Kaye Stevenson
