Paynes hairdresser was located at the bottom of King Street. It was there throughout the 60's and up to the early 70's when the shop disappeared along with the rest of that section of King Street during the demolition of the Wellgate.
This photo was taken in the early 60's and would have looked pretty modern in comparison to it's surroundings.
Not sure if the place attracted Dundee's young trendy hipsters back then mind you, as I never went there!
Where about on King Street would that have been. I can't rememeber it.
ReplyDeletecan't remember that either bridie
ReplyDeleteSt Andrews church is #2 King Street, Paynes was at #2b, so it would have been nearly the last shop in the demolished buildings nearest to Cowgate.
ReplyDeleteI went there when I was about 15 and got absolutely the worst 'soft' perm ever. I looked like Jamie 'Afro' I have distrusted hairdressers ever since !!
ReplyDeleteDidn't they have a shop out the Perth Road as well ?
What does the wee plaque to the side say ? I can't read it when I enlarge the pic
ReplyDeleteThe plaque is too blurred to make out what it says, but I can tell you that the building (#2a) was Century Insurance Co.
ReplyDeleteNext door to Paynes on the right (#2c) was G.B. Forbes - furniture.
G.B. Forbes - that would have been George Butterfield Forbes (1892-1966), the 7th of 8 children of J.T. Forbes who founded the music shop. Search the blog under "Forbes clan" for other family snippets.
