This old cassette by The Junkies dates back to the early 80's and has 3 demo tracks on it. The Junkies played a kind of raunchy, American influenced 70's rock & roll, with a touch of punky trash glam thrown in!
It doesn't have the band details on the cover but I'm guessing Vince, Al, Steve, Alison & Maggie were in the line-up for these recordings.
The 3 tracks are - "Subway Love" - "Pretty Boys" & "Why Don't You Listen To My Heart", and it's the last track I have here for you to tune into. It's a wee bit more downtempo than the other tracks but a song that I'm sure Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers wish they had written!
The quality of the recording does suffer from old age, what with tape hiss and magnetic phasing encroaching on at the start, but you soon get caught up in the melody and you don't notice the poor sound quality after a short while.
See what you reckon, jury..!!
Thanks to MK.
I wish i had written that !!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteLove this , nah ain't heard of Ali Hendrix since the eighties, a hung out with him, roared once for the other band he was in called hangstardust & the stardust cowboys, I last heard he lives in france now it's all I know, ππ΄σ §σ ’σ ³σ £σ ΄σ Ώπ
DeleteSorry to disappoint but these sweet lips are mine!
ReplyDeleteThey used to adorn Junkies posters that featured Frank N Furher brandishing a whip.
It was the polar opposite of all those bedroom bands that were up their own backsides.
Raunch und roll.
Going to see the NY Dolls in December.
Anyone heard from Al Hendrickx recently?
Only saw them once and avoided them after that. But this track is a pure gem, thank you Retro.
ReplyDeleteI remember Vince Piggott with a suit on at the Joeys. He was a Jam fan.
ReplyDeleteah now i get it the umlaut over the u suggests a germanic fascistic influence and the dollar sign through the s suggests an american dodgy influence very funny
ReplyDeleteJust like everyone to know that i've recently located my true identity ( last tuesday in fact )....if anyone fancies some great mixes i've put them up on www.luxurytribe.podomatic.com
ReplyDeletealso doing original material at www.crimeagainstreality.com......enjoy......vince p. (availible for djing)
Last time I saw Vince Piggot he was rambling on about Genesis P Orridge and Psychic TV. Vince is a great guy couldn't imagine him trying to be a Mod.
ReplyDeleteGood to read all this about The Junkies and hear the demo too. Great stuff! Time for a Junkies reunion?
ReplyDeleteAlison Burns is a globe-trotting jazz singer and is part of P3, the music company.
ReplyDeleteAl Hendrickx is AWOL.
Anybody know anything?
The last time I saw Al, I bumped into him in a computer shop on the Hilltown, must have been around 97/98. He told me he was living in London and manager of a music venue.
ReplyDeletehi, fanta here, al hendrickx is in semi-regular contact, he lives in nice, does something illicit and unregulated with finance and entertainment, says he's no comin back. maybe he's in jail for gerontophila. he checks this site out very occasionally, but he doesn't rootle about in the mire of comments.

Great to see everyone getting along and behaving oneself.......what say we all meet for a beer sometime.
Vince P
Well they have Northern Soul re-unions in the Friary these days. Why don't you all hold one in the Ambassador or somewhere with a little bit of history? Jock playing records, backline all set up on the stage. Maybe a reunion from the Quick Spurts, Aaga, Scrotum Poles? Lets be having you!
ReplyDeleteLOL Vincento.. yeah im up for a reunion.after 30 odd years this should be fun. gawd,, was it really THAT long ago. I still feel and think the way I did back then, but my gammy leg doesnt let me dive aroond as much as i used too. I love when i meet folks when im with my kids, and they try and embarrass me by saying " oh i mind yer mum when she was a punk rocker",, they have a standard reply.. " she STILL is".. shuts them right up :)
ReplyDeleteyeah defo put me down for THAT !
lesley g.
I'll work on this.....I'll pop into the Rep and see Mike K....It would be a tonic to The Doghouse....but your correct, it has to be a venue with genuine history.....get in touch Jock at vincepigg@yahoo.com
ReplyDeletethe dog hoose Vince? better making it the Pillars .. was the only pub that let us in, the first few gigs on the marryat, it wa aye crammed. whatever happened to Mad Doad O the East.. ?? Hendicks pal fae the hulltoon LOL..

Sorry Vince, I'm firmly of the adage 'Piss on the past, feck the future and ride rampant through the ruin-strewn present'.
ReplyDeleteI'm off to see the Dolls in Edinburgh tonight.
The new line-up has been together longer than the 70's one and they're a better band.
Wish I had Al's leopardskin jacket.
I actually meant it would be a tonic compared to the nonsense that is The Doghouse.....plus I don't think it should have anything to do with the past....aren't people still creative?
ReplyDeleteI think the baton has been passed.
ReplyDeleteIt's quite different from a re-formed NY Dolls - the Doghouse clientele wouldn't know or care who was around in 1981 and rightly so.
I have long since accepted being an auld fart and I canna be bothered with young people.
It's their pub, not the fart's in the corner havering on about the Tayside Bar and how great it was.
Noted Vince. Yes, some people are still creative and would be a good idea to mix the old with the new by the old if that makes sense?
ReplyDeletewill i never thats gotta be mike he nearly gave me his gretch kane great to hear of you and lesley gray hope shes doing fine yep i saw the junkies in the tayside bar when vince asked the crowd for drinks in an american accent..billy glover
ReplyDeleteI remember (if that term can be used given the times) a couple of Junkies gigs, they were brilliant. Tayside Bar and the Caird Hall. Thanks for posting this up, a total blast. Vince, hope you are doing well. As someone else who worked with the fabulous Jeremy Bryning, I salute you. Last time I saw you I was playing a solo gig in Drouthies and you got me totally sideways before hand, things were going seriously wrong. LOL
ReplyDeleteBrian
well they hings sometimes hAPPEN ...HEHEHE
ReplyDeletehey vince get in touch (Pete Ross)

Al gave me a copy on chrome tape which i used to tape over, and he still owes me for 2 Johhny Thunders tickets at Victoria Apollo,Thunders was hopeless and got beat up on stage by a small girl.
ReplyDeleteActually, Al & I were at the Thunders gigs at the Vic Apollo & the Hope & Anchor....both times we walked in free (times were hard back in the day). We got in by using Louie Luigi's name (BoDiddley's & Thunder's bass player at the time) When Bo played Dundee Uni 4 months earlier I sorted Louie and drummer out for things they needed & Louie put us on the London Thunders's guest list.....
ReplyDeleteYep, It was 1982...& here's the recording

The last time I seen Al Hendrickx was in the 90's. I bumped into him near Paddington Station, London. He told me he was living in London's Maida Vale. I gave him my London telephone number. Although, I never saw or heard from him again. A shame as I really liked Al.
ReplyDeleteHere's some info about me, Nick Parkin, on the Retro Dundee Site. See link below:

hiya i am a pal of Allys from edinburgh and knew him from about 1977. We were in touch for years and i last saw him in the Grassmarket in Edinburgh about 97 or 98. He did say he lived in london. he had also phoned me from the south of france where he said he was temporarily around 96 or 97. I havent heard from him since which worried me as we had managed to stay in touch mainly thru his mums address in Dundee for 20 years at that point! I would love to find out what happened to him. My e mail is Jacqueline@mulvenna.org
ReplyDeleteI believe Al is still in Paddington, unless he has a clone
ReplyDeleteAbout eight years ago he was in Nice, working on property deals.
