Another one of my old ticket stubs - and exactly 30 years ago today, the Boomtown Rats were the band on stage at the Caird Hall.
Quite a lively gig I recall, because by this time they had notched up a few chart hits, and so got a good response from the audience.
The support band on the night were fellow Irishmen, Protex.
After the gig, Bob Geldof was spotted in the Chinese take-away in the Nethergate.
Fast forward a few more years to 2002 and Bob was back on the Caird Hall stage, only now it was a Dundee University ceremony, where he received an Honorary Degree.
Much to my surprise they were brilliant. They also urged everybody to come down to the stage, which we did. I was wary though because at an Elvis Costello gig a few months before, he exhorted the same and I got thrown out for running down to the front.
ReplyDeleteBeforehand I was sitting in the square when Bob went past and I said "thanks for coming here Bob" and he said "glad to be here".
I was there too....standing by the mixing desk along side Paula Yates.
ReplyDeleteThat was my first concert.I was 10.I went with my brother and his girlfriend. Bob Geldof wore a blue top with a red diagonal stripe. The stage was X and Os in the background.
ReplyDeleteYes your right with Bob Geldof and Paula yates being in the Chinkys next to Forbes. Because I was there getting something as well. wasn't at the gig though.
ReplyDeleteI think that was the first gig I went to - aged 13 - that I didn't have to have my Mum at as well (although she dropped us off and picked us up afterwards). Made a change from the Cliff Richard, New Seekers and Corries "gigs" at the Caird Hall I'd been dragged along to previously by my parents.

ReplyDeleteI was working at the old Angus Hotel at that time. Paula Yates can down for her breakfast, she gave me a note to give Bob, I did not see him, so I gave it to " fingers". H asked if I was a the gig, I told him no, as. Had been working. H then gave me 4 tickets for the Aberdeen gig. Th tou was called "The Fine Art Of Surfaceing" I think.
ReplyDeleteI got the hat Bob wore on stage. He threw it into the crowd at the end of the gig. I also got autographs from Bob, Pete and Simon outside Angus Hotel. I was 14. I'm so looking forward to Saturday in Fatty's. Wooooooooo Hoooooooooooo. Reliving my youth
ReplyDeleteThat was my first concert too. Paula was in a red lace dress and had big tattoos. Looking back..she was only a year older than me.
ReplyDeleteI remember my brother going he was 14 and wore a black tie with Rats spelled out in safety pins.
