THE VULCAN BAR - 1970's - #1

On the corner of Victoria Road and Kings Road was Spocks favourite hang-out, The Vulcan Bar. Here it is in the early/mid 70's, still open for business...but only just. As you can see, most of the Vicky has been boarded up, and further down the demolition has started.
I was never in the Vulcan - by the time I was drinking age, all that area had disappeared.

  1. Wish that bar was still there today and the building. Looks great. Who was responsible for ripping the heart out of our city? Was there any voices raised by the locals about pulling down buildings like this?

    1. The culprits for tearing the heart out of this city the Labour led Council who had some crooked members, who did eventually get caught when World in Action exposed them with a series of phone taps but by that time the major damage was done,

  2. The buildings at the time were in extremely poor shape, falling to bits in some cases. I agree this particular example with its turrets looks great isolated, but you couldn't see any of the detail when it was sandwiched in between all the other tennements either side of it when you were on the Vicky pavement. Seeing it now like this, does make you wonder if they could have made an effort to restore it rather than demolish it.

  4. Next to The Vulcan bar on the Vicky, was Chick Mitchell's barber shop run with a Mr Rumgie. My dad used to take me there when I was wee. A small plank of wood across the armrests and a neckline haircut.
