WELLGATE STEPS AREA - MID 70'S
Looking extremely run down at this stage in the mid 70's with all this area preparing to be knocked down. The boards going up on the shop fronts remind me of someone being blindfolded waiting to be executed!
The Interflora sprite logo on the florists at the top of the Wellgate used to scare me when I was wee.
I feel pretty cheated that all those great bits of Dundee got swept away before I had a chance to properly appreciate them. All I feel I am left with are tiny scraps snatched from my childhood.
I'd much rather have the scruffy, bit down-at-heel but characterful Wellgate that was than the bland rubbish that took it's place.
They destroyed beauty and rebuilt in concrete junk most of which is needing pulled down after only 40 years. Beautiful school buildings destroyed all over Dundee to be replaced with junk most of which have already been replaced with more already rotten junk.
Now this was what I liked about Dundee, character all of it's own, but sadly now just memories. Thanks for posting the pictures.

How right you are. What a beautiful heritage Dundee could have had. Such a loss.
DeleteWhen the rest of Britain was sadly pulling down bombed cities Dundee council didn't need Hitler. They did it all by themselves. Shame on them
