A good example of the Hansom Cab (aka The Cab) being occupied by under-agers in the mid 70's was when one night a crowd drinking there set off bangers in the pub. The first one was just thrown into a corner area to give everyone a "wee fleg", but as the night wore on they ended up chucking the bangers from one end of the room to the other, like a snowball fight!
Needless to say, by the end of the 70's they clamped down on this sort of thing and made it compulsory to have your birth certificate with you for proof of age.

my auntie daisy sardella ran the cab for a while in the seventies , did you no have to be under eighteen to get in , lot of fintry folk went then
ReplyDeleteHutchy,
DeleteMust have been after 1973 when you went there. I know the Kirkton High boys (and some girls) would hang out in the Cab on Fridays. Would have been from 1971 to 1973 (when we were aged 15 to 17). Don't think anyone from Fintry would have ventured in at that time.
I remember Daisy well......she actually threw me and my pal out for being underage (totally unheard of) a week before my 18th birthday - we'd been drinking there for about a year!
ReplyDeletemy mum used to work here, her name was Sylvia but was known as Kate
ReplyDeletei remember being in there at some point in the late 70's when I was a bell st student, some chancer walked in off the street leant over the bar and helped themselves to a clutch of notes from the till which was an easy target causing a bit of a stushie
