TRAINEE CHEFS AT KINGSWAY TECH - 80'S

Thought I'd pop this picture up of trainee chefs trying out their recipes over at Kingsway Technical College, sometime around the early/mid 80's - just on the off chance that one of you can spot someone you know.
This was the place to go for further training in your chosen profession - or for the unemployed to have a bit of a skive - this was the era of the YTS Scheme after all!
Wonder how many of the cooks in shot went on to have a successful career in the trade?
Anyway, the other reason for the photo was to lead in to a couple of days worth of food related material.
Tasty old adverts - yum yum!

I never experienced the Kingsway Tech as I went to further education in Edinburgh. Of an evening we would head over to Napier college where they did the same sort of chef training to have our main (only ?) meal of the day in their canteen. We got the leftovers of what they had been preparing upstairs.

Quality grub for very little money. Did the same sort of thing happen at Kingsway?

My day release class afforded me the status of 'student' that got me into the bowling alley.
That is until the full-time students voted out us louts thus severely reducing bar takings in their venue.
After that you needed to be signed in to enjoy the fare.
Back then students were actually intelligent but nowadays if you can tie your own shoelaces you're in!
And if you can't tie your laces, then someone will be assigned to support you with that task.
Pretty soon you will have a degree in The History of Shoes/Pigeons and Pigeonmen/Rap and Funk/The Broons and Oor Wullie/Tidal Anomalies/Whatever and then it will be time to register as 'unemployable'.
Education.
Education.
Education.
What sort of non-goal is that?

professorship in ranting on the way to you from abuttay uny. Jock!

I was a trainee/ commie chef at the tech, I remember the beef in beer served up to the students would always contain very little beer or beef if we were hungry and I think only one of our class of '75 is still cooking for a living, there was is very little reward unless your on TV, my first wage £13.50a week scandalous.

Comrade Bear.

If indeed you were a 'commie' chef then said weekly recompense would have been adequate.
Turnip soup all round!

Hi Anonymous 'Grumpy Jock'.

"Unfortunately, during a Christmas break in the late 70s, an elitist decision was made by the Union Management Committee that only their own students and NUS-affiliated students would be allowed in, which meant, in Dundee, only Bell Street and the Art College, Dundee Uni, College of Commerce and Kingsway Tech being non-NUS."

That's from:-
