VIEW ALONG CHARLESTON DRIVE - 1985

Cruising on over to Charleston Drive, and this was the view when captured on 23rd September 1985.
The obvious change here being the 2 multi blocks in the background at Hillside Court and Gowrie Court, which have since bit the dust!

  1. I used to do that as my milk round for Kerr's. From the top of Arran Drive to Gowriehill Primary...with one of the multis thrown in for good measure.

  2. Spent few summers up there at my Aunties. Used to be a good scheme back in the day.

  4. No wonder some visitors are perplexed by Dundee! Charleston Road is in Charleston, but Charleston Drive isn't. It is in Menzieshill, and leads to Ninewells Hospital, which isn't really at Ninewells. Menzieshill Road isn't in Menzieshill. It's at Ninewells, and leads off Invergowrie Drive, which clearly isn't in Invergowrie. The multi called Ninewells Court wasn't at Ninewells; it was in Menzieshill. Back to Charleston. The official name for the scheme is Camperdown, which nobody ever uses and just as well, because there's a Camperdown Road in Downfield and three Camperdown Streets, one of which is six miles away in Broughty Ferry.

  5. I grew up here when it was opened. The road at the bottom right of the picture, which lreads nowhere, was originally going to be a road into Charleston, before Arran Drive was thought of. We used to refer to it as the "Flyover" and it stretched for a good distance into the fieldie.

  6. Neil E is right. Ninewells hospital was built on Menzieshill Farm. Ninewells was a village along the South side of the Perth Road,so called because a series of natural springs would bubble up to the surface - thus the name. I remember when Ninewells had a shop,a blacksmith,a nursery, two garages,a tram terminus,a railway signal box and even a beach!

  7. My grandmother lived in Hillside Crt up to her passing. I remember visiting on a Sunday and getting a few coppers to go the shop for sweets.
