BETTY WHITE - LOCAL GROCER

Now that it is no longer an image to be seen in Dundee, here is a wee reminder of a typical Betty White shop presentation.
The shops have been dotted around town for quite a few decades, however, as recently as 2 or 3 years ago, the business had to call it a day.
The one in the picture was at Brook Street in the Ferry, late 80's approx.

  3. The Nethergat store was best. In early 70's massive cod, halibut and shark had their pride of place in the front windae o the shop. Had to settle for bag o whelks and fish cakes as we were skint in them days

  4. There was one in Perth's South Street as well. Dunno if they were Scotland-wide or just Tayside? I think our's closed about twenty years ago at least - it was ten yards from Tesco's front door. :-(

  6. You know there are still Greengrocers like this all over the country, who seemed to have survived even though there is a Tesco round the corner. Green Lanes and Holloway Rd, London, Great Western Rd, Glasgow, they are all still there... Why did Dundee loose them?

  8. There was one in Peter St in Dundee as well. I worked there after school and used to go home stinkin' o' fish cos I had to wash the fish trays. They had an ancient till with the round buttons you had to press down and only showed pre-decimal money and this was in the late 70s/early 80s! There was a butcher's in the shop as well (Grosset's ?). The owners of the butchers were brothers. They used to cook steak pies up the stairs. Used to be an old guy who came in for scraps for his dug - yeah right!
